Placement of energy storage elements in Layout

PMICnewbie , 02-28-2024, 05:21 PM
Hi @Robert Feranec
I thank you for your prompt responses. I just wanted to know from your experience of how to place **multiple capacitors and inductors** on a PCB layout. My design is a switching converter with multiple capacitors and inductors.
Do you have any advice regarding the inductors?
Should they be placed on opposite ends, since they will be switching?
Can you educate me a little bit on EMI. and interference of fields of inductors (mutual inductance and parasitics involving PCB placement) and precautions and techniques of placing multiple storage passives (Cs and Ls) on the PCB layout including decapacitors

Any references you can share will be awesome. Thanks

Actually, I am looking for someone who could make simulations on this topic. Right now I just place them the way as it is on the reference board or as it fits on my board, but I have seen some articles and posts about how the fields around these components and inductance can influence performance of the components - but I don't have any solid materials talking about what is right. Maybe someone else has some tips?

good video idea

maybe also obe where there is a multi phase layout

MPS has some video's about this.

Oh wow MPS thanks, this is perfect

But yea some solid tutorial or document on multiple caps and inductors would be nice in the future

If I get any advice soon Ill post here

I contacted Sven from MPS and ask if he would be interested in making a video. Let's see if he will write back. Thank you very much @QDrives for this tip!

What exactly do you mean with multiple inductors? Multi phase? Multiple DC/DC converters? Or multiple in series?
I assumed the second.

all of the above scenarios, I cant exactly fully reveal details of my design as it is a publishable research project, but yes switching inductors, series parallel multiple
